Our Strategy
In 2008, the UK concrete industry agreed a Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy for the UK concrete industry to be recognised as a leader in sustainable construction, by taking a dynamic role in delivering a sustainable, low carbon built environment in a socially, environmentally and economically responsible manner.
Our strategy represents progression, continuous improvement and an increase in scope. The concrete industry will continue to develop performance indicators to ensure the relevance of our metrics. The industry will facilitate further engagement with the broader supply chain for concrete, offering the opportunity to inform development of the strategy and supporting initiatives.
Collectively as an industry - and individually as manufacturers, sector trade associations and MPA The Concrete Centre - we are committed to supporting stakeholders in realising the potential, and understanding the sustainability credentials, of concrete and its constituents.
The Concrete Industry has stated its commitment is to provide the most transparent life cycle assessment data which is compliant with the developing codes and standards. This includes "Embodied CO2 of factory-made cements and combinations”.
We present our commitments and detailed success factors based on the 2012 update of the Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy.
Annual performance reports have been published for 12 years and are testament to achieving a common framework of industry-wide reporting and an ambition of continuous improvement.
In October 2020, the UK Concrete and Cement industry published its Beyond Net Zero roadmap. The roadmap provides a pathway to beyond net zero with an achievable and viable route that uses seven key decarbonisation technology levers.
The strategy represents progression, continuous improvement and an increase in scope. The concrete industry will continue to develop performance indicators to ensure the relevance of our metrics.
